Modernizing a Government Union
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union representing 670,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide and overseas. Workers in virtually all functions of government at every federal agency depend upon AFGE for legal representation, legislative advocacy, technical expertise and informational services.
- Update look and feel to help the organization come across as trustworthy and modern.
- Make it easier to understand, and ultimately take action on, what the key issues were that would potentially be important to AFGE members.
- Provide clear information for the individual government agencies to report on specifics for their members.
When it came to the mobile optimized experience, we knew we needed to focus the experience due to the non-technical savviness of the key user. We landed on the experience above, focusing the user on the key things they needed while on the go—learning more about the association, knowing what their benefits were, take action on a certain issue, or contact their local office. The decision was made specifically to cut out additional navigation as the users, based on research done by the organization, only really needed these 4 key actions while on the go.
The redesign was taken so well, the Project Manager reached out to me to work on an intranet project for them. Unfortunately I was waist-deep in TrackMaven work, so I recommended they check out Friendly Design Co, who translated the visual style from my web redesign into that project. ✌️
